ENERGY STAR CERTIFIES THE FIRST POOL PUMP IN THE INDUSTRY
Pentair Pleased to Announce Its First Three Variable-speed Models are Officially Certified
Sanford, N.C. — March 6, 2013 — As consumers continue to value energy saving products that are more cost
efficient to operate, Pentair Aquatic Systems announces that several of its variable speed pumps have been certified
by ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy,
which is a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.
Pentair is pleased to announce that as of March 1, 2013 its IntelliFlo Variable Speed Pumps, IntelliFlo VF pumps and
IntelliFlo VS+SVRS pumps were the first in the industry to have been certified by ENERGY STAR and will carry the
recognized ENERGY STAR label.
Pentair submitted its variable speed pumps for ENERGY STAR certification first because they are the most energyefficient
of all pump types. According to ENERGY STAR, certified pumps will be, on average, 30-72% more energyefficient
than standard models and save consumers approximately $160 per year, which equates to thousands of
dollars over the lifetime of the pump, and will pay for themselves in under three years. They also have the added
benefit of running quieter and prolong the life of a pool’s filtering system. Each model’s efficiency depends on a
number of factors such as the climate it is used in, the size of the pump, and the number of speeds it has available.
“Most consumers recognize the ENERGY STAR labels found on qualifying home appliances and electronics such as
water heaters, clothes washers, refrigerators, televisions, laptops and even light bulbs,” explains Jeff Farlow, program
manager for Pentair’s energy initiatives. “Now qualifying pool pumps will be eligible to earn the ENERGY STAR label.
This is exciting news for the pool industry because consumers recognize that by using ENERGY STAR certified
products they are doing their part to help protect the environment and save money on their utility bills.” Farlow adds.
ENERGY STAR has stated that if all pool pumps sold in the United States met the official requirements announced in
mid-February, the energy cost savings would grow to about $113 million per year and prevent greenhouse gas
emissions equivalent to those from 140,000 vehicles.
Pentair continues to partner with ENERGY STAR and has other variable-speed and two-speed pumps undergoing
the certification process.
“In our experience, having constructive support from the manufacturers of the products we are looking to certify is an
integral part of the process,” said Christopher Kent, Product Manager for ENERGY STAR Pool Pump Equipment,
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “We have been very pleased with the support provided by the pool industry
as we worked to develop a meaningful certification process, one that underscores how using ENERGY STAR
certified pumps can help swimming pools operate more efficiently, thereby leading pool owners to save energy.”
